Quilts, quilts, and more quilts

As expected, the kitchen workmen were here at 7:00 (on a holiday morning - yikes!) so Mark and I got out of the house early, grabbing breakfast and then heading downtown to take advantage of the plain white wall in my office so that I could (finally) take photographs of my quilts.  I've put them up on Flickr:

(That link should take you to a page of 16 photos.  If it doesn't, let me know, and I'll figure out what I did wrong.)  I may update the photos later, using the images from Mark's superior camera, but I wanted to get something up at long last...

After being photogs, we went to see CHILDREN OF MEN.  It was dark, grim, disturbing, exhausting, and brilliantly well-acted.  For once, I wish that I had read reviews beforehand - there were some long tracking shots that I didn't recognize as such while watching, which all of the reviewers commented on.  (I avoid reviews like the plague because, um, plot is important to me.)  In short, though - not an *enjoyable* film, but an excellent one.  (And the subtle touches, like the ads for Quietus and the patriotic ads in the background were brilliantly done.)

We returned home in time for me to have a minor breakdown about the kitchen, and now we're settling in for the third and fourth hours of 24.  (After which, I'm pretty certain, my violence quotient for the day will be fulfilled...)

Mindy, regretful that the holiday is, essentially, over.

those are lovely quilts. When I moved to Florida, I left all my quilting supplies. They're really heavy to ship! So I left them with my parents.

I looked around quilt shops around here and all of them suck. For being an old foggey state, they sure don't have a huge selection of fabrics or patterns.
I have found it substantially more difficult to find quilt patterns in the past couple of years. I'm still able to locate books, but almost none of the local stores carry single pattern packets anymore. I think that just means that I need to spend more time at quilt shows!
I love the dragonfly quilt!
Thanks! I was pleased with the way the batik fabrics "glow." Of course, I have a thousand and one nits to pick with details in how I executed it, but that's the sad fate of the craftser :-)
Those are lovely! I have a friend who is into quilting, so I know how much work (and time!) go into them. I don't think I have the patience to do it!
There are times when my patience is shot. I've learned to set aside tricky things (like corners) when I'm tired and cranky :-)
Gorgeous quilts. I've been wanting to learn to quilt, even have material to do so, just haven't started. Must admit I'm a bit daunted by the project. I salute you on your talent. And darn it, you write well, too. I may have to become jealous....
LOL - I think that the quilting complements the writing - there's a certain mindlessness to a lot of it that lets me work out details in the writing. As for learning how - I just jumped in, making mistakes along the way, and learning, learning, learning...
Your quilts are lovely. But they leave me with a question. Between a full-time job; quilts; novels; museum, theater, and film attendance, when exactly do you sleep?
LOL - some nights, not at all. (Last night, I was rather, er, anxious about kitchen renovations!)

I started quilting when I was still lawyer-ing. I'd come home too brain-dead from work to do anything other than sit in front of the TV. Quilting gave me the "excuse" to veg in front of mindless shows.

Now, if I win the lottery, you can expect to see that full-time job part of the equation disappear! :-)
I have this special project that I need to work on and complete before March for a surprise gift to be presented in May to a friend of mine during a convention we’re holding for her online game. I’ve never quilted before, except for some very basic stuff when I was a child, and even then it was just plain white cloth and hand drawn designs and basic stitching. Do you have any recommendations on places to go to learn about quilting? Recommendations would be appreciated. Your quilt that you gave away for Halloween and GIRL’S GUIDE was very good!
You know, I don't really have any suggestions (alas!) I'm entirely self-taught, and I learned most of what I know from buying patterns, having them work or not, and then trying to figure out fixes.

G Street Fabrics here in the Metro area offers lots of classes - you might see if one of them works out for you. You could also check fabric stores closer to you and see if they offer classes!

Good luck on your project! (And thanks for your kind words about the GIRL'S GUIDE quilt!)
There was a holiday? Sadly I did not get off work yesterday...
On Monday, I commented to Mark how ironic it was that most "working stiffs" didn't get the day off - certainly not what Dr. King would have envisioned in a day of remembrance!
Yes, it certainly would have helped me get into the spirit of the holiday if I didn't have to deal with being stuck in an office...

A very nice body of quilting work, Mindy!
I am jealous--all I seem to make is UFO's!

Ha! I just don't post photos of those!
