Mindy-- I read the First Book post, but I coudln't comment there bacause the anti-spam security word just shows up as a broken image tag (actually that was in IE; in Firefox, it didn't show up at all).

I agree the world needs more Jakes, but I think all (or at least most) babies are inherently readers. Children learn by repeating; they want the book read to them over and over until they have internalized it and can "read it" themselves. It's sad that not every kid has someone to read to them.
