Fashion Girls

Thanks, and Another Query

Thanks, all.  You've given me confidence that Neko can overhear a message left on Jane's answering machine.  (Poor Jane!)

Next question:  Name an Alanis Morisette song.  Or let me know, "Alanis who?"

Mindy, who thought she was being obvious in one passage, but whose first reader wrote, "Huh?"

Isn't it Ironic?

(Anonymous)

Don't ya think?

Well that is the only one I know...
It's the only one I know, too. But it does spring to mind.
*nods*

Perzactly.
Jagged Little Pill is the first that comes to mind. (And "Ironic" which has nothing at all to do with irony.)
Hand in my Pocket
and
Thank U
I know who she is, but I have no idea of any of her songs, what with being, ah, deaf.

I could probably name about half of her discography, actually, if I sat here long enough. :) "Ironic", "Thank U", "You Oughta Know", "Not The Doctor", "So Pure" ... the list goes on!
Isn't It Ironic, a song containing no actual irony. That's the one I think she's famous/infamous for.
Head Over Feet
Ironic
Hand In My Pocket
You Learn

All from the Jagged Little Pill album. Ironic and Hand In My Pocket were the radio plays, Head Over Feet my fave from the album, You Learn a good one as well.

Want the complete list? ;)
I'm going to add the song is actually "Ironic" and it actually does have irony:

Verse 1: An old man turned 98 / He won the lottery and died the next day
Verse 2: Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly/ He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye/He waited his whole damn life to take that flight/And as the plan crashed down he thought/'well isn't this nice...'

The whole song is about the irony of how life takes a turn when you least expect it--how things just don't work out as expected.

Also, Jagged Little Pill is the name of the album and is used as a line in a song (You Learn), but is not a song itself.

<~~~ owns the CD with the lyrics printed inside. ;)
Jagged Little Pill is the name of the album

I really did know that. Truly.
Heee!
But throughout "Ironic" it's not irony, it's just bad luck. It would be ironic if the old man died because of the shock of winning the lottery, perhaps...

The song itself could be considered ironic because it's not about actual irony. I've argued this point while drunk quite a bit...
While drunk? Hrm, seems I've lost the argument already since I don't drink.
But throughout "Ironic" it's not irony, it's just bad luck.

You are not the only person I know to make this valid point.
People have listed all the ones I know.

Thank you
You oughta know
Let's do it Let's fall in love (from delovely)
"Ironic" (that's the don't ya think" song)
"Jagged Little Pill" (also the name of her first album)
"One hand in my Pocket"
"All I Really Know"
"You Oughta Know"

These are off the top of my head. I have the Jagged Little Pill CD somewhere, I should burn some songs to my player. I liked that album.

I remember little Alanis when she was on 'You can't do that on Television' on Nickelodeon.
Alanis who?

Actually have heard of her, but I couldn't name a song of hers to save my life. Is a "her", yes?

I'm old. Try Grace Slick or Janis Joplin on me...
"You Oughta Know" seems widely known by everyone I went to college with (early/mid-90s).
10 thousands spoons when all you need is a knife (Ironic) :-) I reference that song all the time, because it's funny.

Hand in my pocket is good, too.
21 things I want in a Lover.

You Oughta Know.

Hands Clean.

You owe me nothing in return.

Oh wait, you only wanted one.}:P

That stupid ironic song that is ironic only because nothing in it is ironic.

Alanis is a who, not a where? Sorry. I don't know much beyond the names of a dozen or so mega bands. I might possibly be able to sing the chorus to half a dozen played to death on the radio songs. As me about SF&F authors and what they published. I can tell you all about those! ;-)

Oooh, so many...
- So Pure
- Hand in My Pocket
- Thank U
- Uninvited
- You Oughta Know
- Ironic
- Head Over Feet
- You Learn
...etc.

Psst. It's Alanis Morissette...double S, double T :)
Alanis who?
All I Really Want

(IMO, the angriest song on her first album, give or take You Oughtta Know)
I just want you to know, my curiosity is totally piqued now!!! Can't wait to see what Neko overhears :P
Everyone else has named the Alanis songs I know. But for those who mentioned Ironic, you should know that the Irish comedian, Ed Byrne, does a hilarious line-by-line examination of that song pointing out exactly why it isn't ironic. His act got ripped off by loads of other comedians, but if you can find his version on Youtube then it's the best.
"You Oughta Know" and "Thank U."

Uninvited.

It's funny what we think everybody knows.
Were you and Alanis being "Ironic"?

Was it a "You Can't Do That on Television" reference?

(Anonymous)

Heh, I was wondering when someone was going to bring up her Can't Do That days...

Head over Feet is my fave, but Hands Clean has a special meaning for me too.

Oh, that was me.

My 18-year-old says she loves Alanis Morisette. "You Oughta Know" is her favorite song.
"Jagged Little Pill."

I hate Alanis Morrissette, but even I've heard of that one :)
"You Oughta Know" comes to mind first, followed by "Hand in My Pocket," "You Learn" and, of course, the infamous "Ironic."

If age is a relevant data point here, I'm 52, but Canadian... we tend to get a little worked up when one of our own makes it big on the international scene.
